How Do I Unzip a File in Windows XP?

Windows XP has a standard utility for unzipping files. If you are using Windows 2000 or earlier, see How Do I Use the WinZip Utility in Windows 2000 or Earlier? (below)

Zipped files are compressed, saving space. This makes downloading files from the Internet faster and allows software distributors to put more files on distribution media, such as a CD. Most zipped files end with the .zip extension.

Procedure

  1. Double-click the zipped file.
  1. In the window that opens, click Extract all files.
  1. The Extraction Wizard opens.
  1. Click Next.
  2. In the Select a Destination panel, select the location where you want the folder to be placed, for example, the Desktop. Click Next to extract it in the current location.
  1. In the Extraction Complete panel, select Show extracted files. Check Finish. The unzipped files appear in a new window.
